U Muang Lay taps a wooden stake against the edge of his boat, sending instructions to Irrawaddy dolphins

— Observed: Irawaddy River, Myanmar

Observed1

U Muang Lay, one of the last ‘cooperative fishermen’, taps a wooden stake against the edge of his boat, sending instructions to (now-endangered) Irrawaddy dolphins. The dolphins round up fish, and Muang catches them with a net. This inter-species duo catches up to five times more fish than a fisherman on his own.
